Can dogs eat pineapple? Find out which fruits your pooch can and can't eat

Do you sometimes want to give your dog a piece of fruit but wonder if it's safe for them to eat? Although dogs can eat most fruits, some have proved to be very toxic and must be avoided. Here are the fruits your dog can and can't eat.

Which fruits are safe for dogs?

Can dogs eat apples?

Yes, they can but make sure to remove the seeds and core. Apples are a great source of fibre and vitamins A & C.

How about bananas?

Bananas are safe for dogs. They contain vitamins and minerals such as potassium and copper. They are low in cholesterol but high in sugar, so it's best to give them to your dog as an occasional treat.

Are blueberries, strawberries and raspberries ok?

Yes, your dog can safely enjoy these berries! They contain a lot of antioxidants, vitamins & fibre.

Raspberries have anti-inflammatory benefits which are great for senior dogs. However, they do contain xylitol in small quantities (which is toxic to dogs) so make sure to only give them a few raspberries at a time.

Moderation is also recommended when it comes to feeding them strawberries due to the high sugar content.

Can dogs eat mango?

This delicious summer fruit is safe for them to eat and a great source of vitamins and potassium. Simply make sure to remove the hard pit and to use mango as an occasional treat (again, high sugar content)

Are oranges safe to eat?

Although your pooch might not enjoy the strong citrus smell, oranges are a great source of vitamin C & fibre. It is recommended to only give them the flesh after having removed the peel (hard to digest) and all the seeds.

Can dogs snack on peaches?

Fresh or frozen peaches are safe for dogs to eat as long as you don't give them the pit. Avoid canned fruits which are full of sugary syrups.

Is pineapple a good option?

Dogs can eat a few chunks of pineapple as a snack. Not only is it packed with vitamins & minerals but it also contains bromelain, an enzyme that helps with protein absorption. You just need to remove the outside peel and the crown.

What about watermelon?

Dogs can eat watermelon flesh, not the rind and seeds (which can cause intestinal obstruction). Due to its high water content, snacking on watermelon can help your pooch stay hydrated on warm days.

What are the fruits that dogs can't eat?

Can dogs eat avocado?

It is strongly recommended to avoid feeding your dog avocado as it contains a toxin (persin) which causes vomiting and other gastrointestinal issues.

Are cherries safe to eat?

No, your pooch shouldn't eat cherries. They contain cyanide which prevents your dog's blood cells to get enough oxygen.

If your dog has eaten cherries and has dilated pupils and/or difficulty breathing, seek urgent care immediately as this could indicated cyanide poisoning.

How about grapes?

Keep your dog away from grapes and raisins as they are very toxic. They can cause acute sudden kidney failure and are just not worth the risk.
