Fleas and ticks are not to be underestimated. From severe itching to Lyme disease, they can cause a variety of health issues. Here are 3 tips to help protect your dog, especially now that flea season is in full swing.
Prevention treatment
There are several topical flea and tick prevention treatments to keep these little pests at bay. Whilst you can find good ones over-the-counter, it may be useful to ask your vet for a stronger treatment that you can get with a prescription.
Check your dog
Instead of only checking when your dog is visibly itching, it is recommended to regularly use a flea comb to check through their coat. This could help you detect a flea or tick that your dog may not have felt.
Check your home
Fleas love to shield from the outside element, therefore they can easily make themselves at home in your own space. Make sure to wash and vacuum your dog's bedding and blankets often to keep them away.
As for ticks, they thrive in grass and low bushes. So keep your lawn short and your garden trimmed to reduce the risk of attracting them.
